about

Euphonia is a song inspired by Joseph Faber's 'fabulous talking machine', an automaton created during the mid 1800s and exhibited in 1845 in Philadelphia and London. Euphonia contained complex mechanisms, including bellows and a mechanical replica of the human vocal tract, which were capable of producing human speech and song.

lyrics

In the darkness of old Josef's room
amid the clutter of clockwork and gears
sits a face bright and pale as the moon
singing songs that no one cares to hear

From this smooth face of fine porcelain
stare two eyes that could almost be real
and her breath ebbs and flows as the bellows below
rise and fall with the turn of a wheel

Oh, oh, Euphonia
Euphonia
Oh, oh, Euphonia
Euphonia

Well this wondrous mechanical girl
was a marvel once known far and wide
But long gone are the days when she stood on displays
and the crowds processed reverently by

Now she sits in this room all alone
Her heart an unravelling spring
As the gears flicker round a faint ticking sound
marks the moments of life left within

Oh, oh, Euphonia
Euphonia
Oh, oh, Euphonia
Euphonia

Euphonia sits now forsaken
with nobody present to wind
Her gears flutter and purr as she utters the words
"For the moment at least I'm alive"

Her unquestioning movement now falters
as once well-kept working give in
With what power is left she draws in a breath
For the last time Euphonia sings

Oh, oh, Euphonia
Euphonia
Oh, oh, Euphonia
Euphonia

Oh, oh, Euphonia
Euphonia
Oh, oh, Euphonia
Euphonia
