Drawing on the macabre tradition of the American 'Murder Ballad', this song recounts a tale of two nefarious characters driven toward their inevitable downfall by their own devilish greed.

The Vicar and the Undertaker
Rev. Coots and Mr Baker
looked to bring a little work their way

With every death they'd make a killing
whether natural or unwilling
Soon they found a way to make it pay

The Undertaker's in cahoots
with that fiendish Rev. Coots
profiteering from each grim demise

The 'Hand of God' would strike them down
then Baker put them in the ground
taking money in return for lives

When the church's funds grew thin

the two men sneaking cheek by jowl,
would cruise around the town in Baker's hearse
