about

'The Glass Song' was inspired by a malady reported between the 15th and 17th century known as the Glass delusion. Sufferers feared that they were turning in to glass, and that, as a result, could shatter into pieces if they didn't protect themselves against such. One famous sufferer was King Charles VI of France, who refused to allow people to touch him, and wore reinforced clothing to protect himself from accidental “shattering”. I felt there was a poignant metaphor here and so I wrote this song.

lyrics

Lyrics
"It's much worse than at first I had feared"
said his love quietly in his ear
A strange thing's come to pass
I am turning to glass
and I fear I may soon disappear

So make no sudden movements I plead
Understanding and care's what I need
Please don't push me too hard
I could shatter in shards
and then what would become of me my love
What would become of me?

Please promise me sweetly as I disappear
if I fade completely remember me dear
for you know, though I'll miss you, I'll always be near

This strange change has come at great cost
for I fear soon that all might be lost
This crystalline form is no longer warm
my once soft skin is now fragile glass
my soft skin is now fragile glass

Please promise me sweetly as I disappear
if I fade completely remember me dear
for you know, though I'll miss you, I'll always be near

-Instrumental-

Please promise me sweetly as I disappear
if I fade completely remember me dear
for you know, though I'll miss you, I'll always be near

And hold me so sweetly as I disappear
I care not if you break me as long as you're near
I could shatter in your arms
Just stay close my dear
